A Study on Boundary Layer Arc in an MHD Generator Channel

In a propane-oxygen combustion MHD generator channel, experimental measurements were made of the V–I characteristics accompanying the arc current with an without and externally-applied magnetic field. The data for V–I characteristics were analyzed by a theoretical approach using Rosa's arc model. Good agreement between the theoretical results and the experimental data was observed. Moreover, the critical current densities were obtained from the V–I characteristics data and could be compared with a curve calculated by using Petty's model. It has been confirmed that a strong magnetic field affects the behavior of the electrode boundary-layer arc.
